IHT Screen Test: Penélope Cruz

The trapped film producer in me is really in to the IHT’s online ‘Screen Test’ series. Here Lynn Hirschberg interviews (a favourite of mine) Penélope Cruz (Grrrr!), who stars in two new films, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and “Elegy.”

“It Warms The Cockles of Your Heart”
Tonight the RSA is showing the documentary Lake of Fire. Fifteen years in the making it is a two and half hour epic, shot in black and white, that tackles the subject of abortion in the US. The film was made by Tony Kaye who famously disowned his first feature film American History x. I wasn’t surprised to learn that it contains extremely disturbing and graphic images but I certainly didn’t expect Tony Kaye to also be the man responsible for one of the most recognised television adverts of the 80s. The Q&A afterwards should be interesting…

Cinema’s sweet-eating policy sucks?

Cinema’s sweet-eating policy sucks? - Yahoo! Movies UK http://uk.movies.yahoo.com/19022008/5/cinema-s-swe… A Stockport postman was thrown out of his local cinema for bringing in his own supply of sweets Cinemas make their money mainly from advertising revenue and confectionary. With Distributors taking a large percentage of box office sales (for Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace it was over 90%) the only way to ensure the doors stay open is to show an endless stream of adverts you have already seen on the telly and put a 5500% mark up on salted popcorn (yes, really). There are always posters to remind you that you are not allowed to bring in your own soft drinks and eatables but I never thought anyone would actually get kicked out of a cinema for doing so. My top tips would be; arrive ten minutes after the scheduled programme start time, wait until the lights go down before you start munching your contraband and (most importantly) avoid any cinema that needs security guards in the first place!»

True Stories: Lake of Fire

Screening | 28 February 2008 18:00
Speakers: Peter Dale, Tony Kaye
Location: RSA, 8 John Adam Street, London, WC2N 6EZ

“Fifteen years in the making, this epic documentary stands unquestionably as the definitive work on the ever-dividing issue of abortion. Filmed entirely in black and white, director Tony Kaye’s (American History X) Lake of Fire probes into the complexities of abortion proving that both sides of the issue have equal historical and moral credibility. It is measured, intelligent and suitably objective, regardless of one’s own position.”
