New York Times Wants to Be the Pandora of News

Reblogged infoneer-pulse:

The New York Times is beginning to roll out an experimental new approach to personalized news that the Poynter Institute compares to Pandora’s approach to suggesting music based on what users say they like. The paper is trying to provide a more social news experience that includes not only personalization but also a reader reputation system and new approach to commenting. So far, most of the new additions have been happening behind the scenes—rethinking how to do recommendations and tweaking algorithms. When the toolbar for TimesPeople, a simple social network launched in 2008, disappeared this week, Poynter’s Jeff Sonderman suspected something biggest was in store and reached out to chief technology officer Marc Frons who explained some upcoming features.

The first image of bin Laden that the White House may show us is ‘bloody and gruesome, with a bullet wound to his head above his left eye.’ If it’s released, this is the image that will instantly supplant every other account of Sunday’s raid as the iconic representation of America’s moment of triumph over its most wanted enemy. Is that what we want—the official equivalent of the Saddam hanging video? Did we learn nothing from the past decade about the overwhelming power of crude images of violence to define and polarize our historical moment?

infoneer-pulse:

The New York Times is developing a personalized, social news service, News.me.

The venerable newspaper is partnering with pseudo-incubator Betaworks to bring the product to market. The site is currently nothing more than an inscrutable honeycomb logo, but Betaworks CEO John Borthwick told the newspaper that News.me has already been in development for six months and is expected to launch publicly by the end of 2010.

Tens of millions to go ‘mobile’
Reblogged techspotlight:

Tens of millions of Indian mobile-phone users could gain a gateway to the internet through a cloud-based service developed by Hewlett-Packard’s research division in the country.
HP Labs’ SiteOnMobile allows access to the internet using only SMS text messages and voice commands – potentially opening it to India’s 600 million users of mostly low-end mobile phones.
By issuing commands to so-called TaskLets – the servers of which are based in the cloud – users can perform tasks such as checking the status of an order, requesting a quotation or booking a doctor’s appointment.

The Senate is considering a bill that would give President Obama unprecedented new powers to control the internet in a national emergency. The bill, introduced by Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) would give the White House what some have called an internet “kill switch” allowing the president to shut down specific websites or whole portions of the internet
